Seen at Regal Lacey Cinemas; Movie Released on March 14, 2025; Seen film in March 15, 2025
The Looney Tunes are Back with Porky Pig and Daffy Duck being the stars of the traditionally animated film, “The Day the Earth Blew Up”. Despite the film’s stay in Cinema being very short, it does present boatloads of hope that Hand Drawn animation would return to North American soil and a constant reminder of the beauty of where animation truly began. Not to mention Looney Tunes happens to be one of the first cartoons I witnessed as a child and I continue to laugh at all of the antics. I tip my hat to Eric Bauza and his performance as both Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. This movie also recharges my sense of happiness and humor. I had loads of fun and laughs from the movie. Even though the time is short, I like the movie so much that I’m looking forward to the Blu Ray release.
Time to dive in to this review and advocate more hand drawn animation such as this masterpiece. And based on the looks of this one as Porky would say, “That’s not all folks”. Also be aware that there will be spoilers found in the review.
Plot Spoilers
Porky and Daffy, the classic animated odd couple, turn into unlikely heroes when their antics at the local bubble gum factory uncover a secret alien mind control plot. Against all odds, the two are determined to save their town (and the world!)...that is if they don't drive each other crazy in the process.
Boatloads of Looney Tunes Fun
I’m very pleased to see the Looney Tunes returning to the big screen starting with Porky and Daffy. Everything that defines Looney Tunes, truly reinvigorate my sense of childhood. Every crazy joke and antic including the fourth wall breaks truly defines the classic Looney Tunes. Throughout the entire film was a rollercoaster of funny and joy. I also like it where Daffy continuously act as Porky’s foil, especially whenever he goes loony. Even throughout the 90 minutes runtime, I had a lot of laughs and a few dramatic scenes from the crazy duo. I also like the part where the Alien Main Plot also plays a very invigorating role. I like to tip my hat to Mr. Eric Bauza for voicing Porky Pig and Daffy Duck. As for Candi Milo’s role as Petunia Pig, I like it when they add her stuttering whenever she gets nervous. That additional quirk really works for her.
Final Thoughts
Even with the Alien mind control via gum plot and 90-minute rollercoaster ride, I find this film a wonderful hand drawn work from Collaboration of Tonic DNA and several other animation studios. This movie gives me the gift of joy and laughter I yearn to experience again. In addition to that, the first hand drawn western animated film since 2011. It is a very long time for a hand-drawn animated film to make such a remarkable return that I want to see more in theaters that often. It also did a nice touch of the themes of Friendship between Porky and Daffy. It also adds a nice touch with Daffy being the foil due to his crazy behavior compared to Porky’s straight man trope. With a lot of twists and turns, the movie’s still enjoyable at the very least. Even though the film’s theater length is short, I still plan to get the Blu-Ray all the while.
The Day the Earth Blew Up gets 8.9 out of 10 stars. I love how the team made an effort in crafting such a wonderful yet nostalgic masterpiece. I’m also looking forward to the day that Ketchup entertainment would showcase Coyote vs. Acme as well.
